Nestled in the heart of Fremont, California, Mission Peak stands as a natural treasure offering breathtaking views of the San Francisco Bay Area. Towering at 2,517 feet above sea level, this iconic peak boasts breathtaking panoramic views of the San Francisco Bay Area, making it a must-visit spot for both locals and tourists alike. At the summit, you’ll find something that has become synonymous with the area, Mission Peak’s pole, which is a symbol of triumph and determination. However, this beloved landmark recently faced a troubling setback when it was vandalized this past Labor Day weekend.
For hikers and outdoor enthusiasts, the pole atop Mission Peak signifies the completion of a challenging journey up the peak’s rugged terrain. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or a beginner, taking a photo with the pole is THE accomplishment and posting to social media is a must.
According to ModernHiker, underneath the pole is a time capsule containing a bottle of 1990 Zinfandel wine, a replica of an Ohlone charmstone, and pop culture images like Bart Simpson and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Oh how we would love to try the 1990 Zin! The park service plans to open it in 2090 or later. If the opportunity ever arose, the team at Mission Peak Wine would love to add a bottle of our Cabernet Sauvignon to a future time capsule.
If you haven’t heard by now, in a disheartening turn of events, the iconic pole fell victim to vandalism this past Labor Day weekend. The act left many in the community saddened and disheartened. Local authorities are currently investigating the incident, and efforts are underway to restore this beloved symbol of achievement.
Despite this recent setback, Mission Peak remains a captivating destination. The main trail, accessible from the Stanford Avenue staging area within the Mission Peak Regional Preserve, offers a challenging but rewarding 6-mile round trip hike through scenic grasslands. Although the pole may be temporarily shortened, the stunning views and natural beauty of the area are as captivating as ever.
The 360 degree panoramic views from the summit are still a compelling reason to tackle the Mission Peak hike. On clear days, you can enjoy sweeping views of the San Francisco Bay, Silicon Valley, and glimpses of the distant Sierra Nevada Mountains. You can even see Mission Peak Wine’s vineyard from the summit; while standing at the top of the Peak, look north and you will see our 6.5 acre vineyard. This is where 100% of our wine is grown!
